Everyone at one time or another faces struggles in their lives. However, there are times when our past experiences can significantly impact our present life through lingering unresolved memories which seem to ‘hijack’ our normal cognitive and emotional abilities. The past experiences often involve trauma (assault, child/sexual/physical abuse, accident, abandonment, neglect, anxiety, wars, etc.). Even though the trauma may have happened a long time ago the effects of the trauma still play a role in our lives in many different ways.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and involves a series of protocols including side to side eye movements and reflection on previous traumas. EMDR helps you process the past and through therapy, supports you in moving forward with a healthy and productive life.
Put another way, It is like getting a gaping wound (trauma), that gets sewn up (pushing it aside), and perhaps even gets infected now and then (the past influences the present). EMDR helps turn the infected wound into a scar. The scar is there (cannot change the past) but it does not hurt to touch it anymore (success of EMDR). EMDR has been shown to be successful with both adults and children.
If you feel EMDR could help you or your loved one work through struggles in your life that are related to past traumas please do not hesitate to call, 403-619-8558, and make your appointment today with DeeDee Kay who is trained and experienced with EMDR therapy.
