‘Tis the season for new years resolutions, which means the season of breaking new years resolutions will be upon us. Goal setting is a great way to enhance someone’s overall quality of life, but it is a somewhat formulated process that is easy to follow in order to properly make New Year’s resolutions and to retain them.
Some tips to ensure successful retention of goals set, would be by using the SMART model, which entails that one sets specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound goals. Ensuring that all these criteria are met can significantly increase the likelihood of retention of goals, as well as increasing the likelihood that these goals are achieved.
Another important factor to goal setting would be ensuring that your goal is easily visible, whether it be a daily reminder on your phone or a written note stuck to the fridge. Another important factor is sharing your goal(s) with another person, this way they can check up on how you are meeting each SMART criterion in order to achieve your goal(s). It is also a good idea to discuss your goals with a professional, whether it be a coach of your organized sports team or a counsellor.
