Postpartum Anxiety Depression & Infertility Counselling
Perinatal MOOD & ANXIETY DISORDERS
Many women experience emotional changes during the perinatal period (i.e. during pregnancy and after childbirth). These changes range from mild baby blues to more moderate and severe symptoms. For some women, these emotional changes lead to the development of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. A combination of factors contributes to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders e.g., rapidly changing hormones, lack of adequate rest and sleep, previous history of a mood or anxiety disorder, a lack of adequate social support, labour and delivery experiences, other stressors, and the demands of caring for a newborn. Women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders often blame themselves and experience extensive guilt. It is important to seek support for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders to protect the well-being of mothers, partners, and the family.
I have worked with women experiencing prenatal anxiety, postnatal anxiety, prenatal depression, and postpartum depression for the past 10 years. My background in both family systems nursing and psychology inform my counselling work with both individuals and couples. I offer individual counselling services for women dealing with depression, anxiety, birth trauma, and other challenges like infertility, miscarriage and pregnancy loss. I also offer couples counselling services for couples who find their relationships are strained by the transition to pregnancy, parenthood, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, infertility and IVF protocols. There is always hope and counselling services are designed to promote growth in the areas of mood regulation, anxiety management, enhanced self-confidence, self-care, and relationship care.
