Is my partner, ok? Now that you can recognize the signs of depression, you may be wondering if your partner is struggling with it. You may be feeling frustrated that your efforts to get them going are not yielding lasting results. It feels like two steps forward and then we are right back to where we started. Don’t blame yourself.
When symptoms last for more than two weeks, then it is possible your partner is struggling with depression. And they will need some help.
what can you do?
- Encourage them to seek mental health support.
- Research and help them find a psychologist, support group, psychiatrist or MD.
- Assist them in going and be willing to participate.
- It is helpful for them to know they are not alone.
You can further support them by ensuring there is a daily routine to follow such as meals, exercise with them and be sure to actively listen to them, letting them know you understand.
Finally, as a partner supporting someone else, be sure to take care of yourself. Self-care is not selfish; it is one of the most loving things you can do while trying to be there for someone else. Take care of your mental health, stay engaged in your hobbies and allow yourself to be supported by others.
We are here to help.
