For years now the month of June has been marked as Pride month. Pride month represents a period to celebrate and show support for the LGBTQ+ community. June is a month that specific spaces are created for LGBTQ+ pride and can be celebrated and supported. Unfortunately these spaces do not exist consistently throughout the year and pride month can contribute to the normalization of the LGBTQ+ community and lifestyle.
During pride month it is also very common for people to come out to their families as identifying with the LGBTQ+ community. The process of sharing your sexuality is extremely vulnerable and can bring positive or negative impacts on the individual’s relationships. For people who are not supported by their family or friends in being part of the LGBTQ+ community, extreme rejection and grief can be experienced, which can lead to many mental health struggles, like depression. Mental health struggles are common within the LGBTQ+ community due to the feelings of rejection, loneliness, or misunderstanding that someone may have felt in association with their LGBTQ+ identity.
As the month of June comes to an end, the celebrations and welcoming of members of the LGBTQ+ community should not. Each and every person deserves respect, love and support no matter their lifestyle or who they love. If you or someone you know is in need of support please reach out to Journey Counselling and book an appointment to speak with a registered psychologist today.
