Children’s Self-Esteem

Children’s Self-Esteem
During adolescence, self-esteem can drop due to body image issues like acne, and parents can take proactive steps to support their child's confidence and well-being during this vulnerable phase.

Back to school season is here, and with that comes good things like structure to your kids’ daily lives and hanging out with their friends on a regular basis. But like these good things, more negative things can come along, such as the stress of homework, teen dramas, and self-esteem issues and your child’s perception of body image.

In light of Acne Awareness Month, it is said that the first self-esteem drop one experiences is in between the ages of nine to thirteen years old, which you can read more about here. Physical imperfections, such as acne, can cause a self-esteem drop in one’s adolescent years as it can be perceived by an adolescent as an embarrassing abnormality that makes them stand out in a negative way, hindering their ability to fit in based off the way they look. This perception can have a domino effect of negative feelings and emotions in the adolescent, affecting the way they may see themselves and how they believe other people perceive them (which is a big deal for adolescents).

While it is normal for a teen to lack confidence sometimes, adolescence is a vulnerable time that can cause a huge drop in self-esteem during this phase of life. Now, as a parent this may worry you, but there are many things you can do to proactively and reactively help your teen’s self-esteem, which you can read about HERE.
