Movember and Men’s Health

Movember and Men’s Health
This Movember, men across Calgary and beyond are raising awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health — encouraging open conversations, early check-ups, and support for men’s well-being.

If you’ve noticed more moustaches around Calgary this month, you’re not imagining it. Every November, men across Canada and around the world grow their “Mo” in support of Movember — a movement that raises awareness and funds for men’s health.

While the moustaches are often light-hearted, the message behind them is serious. Movember focuses on three major areas of men’s health:

These are issues that affect countless men — friends, partners, fathers, brothers, colleagues — often quietly and without enough conversation. Movember is about changing that silence into support.

Why Movember Matters

In Canada, the numbers tell an important story. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15 to 39. But just as critical, are the mental health challenges men face.

Across the country, about 75% of suicide deaths are among men. Societal expectations around masculinity make it difficult for men to reach out or open up about how they’re feeling. Messages like “be strong” or “don’t talk about it” can create real barriers to getting help.

The truth is, strength looks different for everyone. Sometimes, it’s admitting that things feel heavy. Sometimes, it’s booking that first counselling session, or checking in with a friend who seems off. Movember reminds us that looking after your health — body and mind — is something to take pride in.

Men’s Mental Health: A Conversation Worth Growing

Talking about mental health doesn’t have to happen with a professional. Sometimes, it starts with a conversation over coffee, a walk with a friend, a check-in from a family member, or a moment to admit, “I’m not doing great right now.”

Everyone’s way of coping looks different — it might be opening up to a partner, spending time outdoors, reconnecting with their community, or reaching out to a trusted mentor or counsellor. What matters most is that no one goes through difficult times alone.

When we make space for honest conversations, we remind each other that it’s okay to ask for help — and that healing and strength often begin with connection.

How You Can Get Involved

There are many ways to take part in Movember — whether or not you grow a moustache:

  • Grow your Mo

Wear it proudly and let it start conversations about men’s health.

  • Move for Movember

Walk, run, cycle, or set your own fitness challenge while raising funds.

  • Talk About It

Ask your friends, family, or coworkers how they’re doing — and really listen.

  • Get Checked

Regular check-ups for prostate or testicular health save lives.

Every small action helps normalize open conversations around men’s health and encourages others to do the same.
