Sleep, A cornerstone to human functioning. Without sleep, people are often extremely less functional physically and mentally. Mental functioning can include thought processes, alertness and consciousness. Each of these aspects is an important part of daily life which makes good sleep crucial for functioning. Not only does sleep impact functional parts of the brain but it can also impact the overall mental health of someone. Sleep disorders are an impactful part of many individuals’ lives. Poor sleep level can also be a symptom of several mental disorders such as depression.
Though, sleep can be a major aspect of mental disorders it also can be a contribution to putting you at higher risk for poor mental functioning. During some of the stages of sleep, brain functioning picks up and processes emotional information. Because of this, a lack of sleep has been shown to negatively affect the storage of positive emotional content. If someone is going through an emotional period the processing of these emotions is crucial during sleep.
As national sleep day approaches, we at Journey counselling encourage you to prioritize your mental health through good sleep practices. This step is one that our body is naturally inclined towards and giving ourselves time to get 6-8 hours of sleep a night is a great place to start practicing mental health care. If you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep because of your mental health, journey counselling is here and ready to support you.
