Have you ever tried opening up about something you are struggling with and hearing, “everything happens for a reason” or “look on the bright side”?
Why May These Comments Be Frustrating?
Although these phrases are meant to be encouraging or uplifting, they can often disregard the depth of emotions the individual is undergoing.
Toxic Positivity
Overemphasizing positivity may lead to:
- Emotional Suppression
- Relationship Strain
- Increased Stress and Anxiety
- Loneliness and Isolation
- Reduced Trust
Why May These Comments Be Frustrating?
-
Excessive pressure to stay positive
Even during painful experiences.
-
When comments that are well-intentioned such as “keep your chin up” dismiss someone’s feelings instead of acknowledging them
Feeling invalidated and misunderstood when experiencing normal human emotions like sadness or anger.
-
Negative emotions are suppressed or replaced with positivity
This prevents individuals from seeking support.
-
An obligation to hide your struggles to appear strong
Creates fear of opening up or showing vulnerability, even with loved ones.
-
When there is limited room for honest conversations about difficult experiences
Prevents people from processing their emotions.
Healthy Positivity
Instead of always acting like everything is ok…
Recognize and accept the full range of human emotions, both the positive and negative.
Learning to sit with discomfort, process difficult feelings, and support others without dismissing their experiences can lead to healthier coping strategies and stronger relationships.
Something to Think About
The ability to persevere through challenges is valuable, but when strength becomes an expectation rather than a choice, it can make vulnerability feel difficult.
Remember
What good is being “strong” if it means suffering in silence?
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of self-awareness and true strength.
You Are Not Meant to Overcome the Challenges of Life Alone
It is important to have an emotional support system:
- Family
- Friends
- Peers/Colleagues
- Therapists/Counsellors
- Social Support Groups
Reaching out for support is the healthiest decision you can make for yourself.
