Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, culturally sensitive therapy adapts counselling to fit you. Your values, your context, and your story.
Why Is Culturally Sensitive Therapy Important?
Many traditional therapy models were developed within Western, individualistic frameworks. While these approaches can be helpful, they may not fully reflect the experiences of people from diverse cultural backgrounds. When culture is overlooked, clients may feel misunderstood, invalidated, or hesitant to open up.
What Does Culturally Sensitive Therapy Look Like?
To be culturally sensitive, our therapists:
- Remain curious and open about a client’s cultural experiences and worldview
- Adapt their approach to align with a client’s values, communication style, and goals
- View the client as the expert on their own lived experience
- Acknowledge the impact of systemic issues like racism, stigma, or marginalization
Advocating for Culturally Sensitive Therapy
If you’re considering therapy or already working with a therapist, here are a few ways to advocate for culturally sensitive care:
-
Name what matters to you
You can share aspects of your identity or culture that feel important to your mental health. This might include family expectations, spirituality, community values, or experiences of discrimination.
-
Ask Reflective Questions
It’s okay to ask your therapist questions like:
How do you incorporate culture into your work with clients?
Are you open to talking about how my background affects my experiences? -
Notice how you feel in sessions
Feeling heard, respected, and safe is important. If something doesn’t sit right, that feeling is worth paying attention to.
-
Give feedback
If a therapist misunderstands something or makes an assumption, you can say so. A culturally sensitive therapist will welcome feedback and adjust accordingly.
-
Remember you have a choice
You are allowed to seek a therapist who aligns with your needs and values. Finding the right fit is part of the process, not a failure.
