When You Don't Recognize Yourself Anymore: Finding Your Identity After Parenthood

You can love the life you created and still miss the person you used to be.

Maybe before becoming a parent you had more time for yourself. You could make spontaneous plans, pursue your interests whenever you wanted, spend time with friends, or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon without worrying about someone else’s needs.

Then you gave birth…

Suddenly, your life changed overnight.

Your days began revolving around:

Becoming a Parent Changes More Than Your Routine

When discussing parenthood, the physical changes after pregnancy and childbirth are what most people acknowledge, yet we forget that this transition comes with many psychological changes as well.

What is Matrescence?

The transition into motherhood.

These changes can often feel like you are losing the person you once were. Perhaps you used to be more confident in your career but now question your abilities after time away from work. Maybe you miss the closeness you once shared with your partner, or struggle to remember the last time you did something purely for yourself.

Missing Your Old Life Doesn't Mean You Regret Your New One

One of the most difficult parts of parenthood can be acknowledging feelings that seem contradictory. You can feel grateful for your children while missing your independence. You can love your partner while missing the relationship you shared before becoming parents. You can find caregiving meaningful while feeling exhausted by its demands.

You are not a bad parent for grieving the life you once had.

Missing your old life does not mean you are wishing your current one away. You are simply acknowledging that even meaningful changes can involve sacrifices and those deserve recognition.

Making Room for Yourself Again

Rediscovering yourself after parenthood doesn’t mean returning to exactly who you were before having children. Your experiences have changed you, and some of those changes may be deeply meaningful.

Instead, it means recognizing that your identity extends beyond the responsibilities you carry.

Start by asking yourself what you’ve been missing

Finding your sense of self may involve reconnecting with old interests, exploring new ones, sharing caregiving responsibilities, or reaching out for support.

How to Make Time for Yourself

  • Sharing responsibilities

Caring for a baby involves more than changing diapers and completing household chores. It also means remembering appointments, planning meals, and anticipating everyone's needs. Discuss how these responsibilities can be shared with your partner or support system so that everything doesn't fall on you.

  • Reconnecting with your interests before parenthood

Make time for hobbies and activities you once enjoyed, even if it's just for a few minutes a day.

  • Accepting help from others

You don't have to manage everything on your own. When family or friends offer a helping hand, allow yourself to accept their support.

  • Maintaining relationships outside of parenting

Stay connected with friends and loved ones who remind you of the person you are beyond being a parent.

  • Adjusting your expectations

Your responsibilities have changed, and it's okay if you're not as productive as you once were. Give yourself room to adjust without unnecessary pressure.

  • Recognizing when you need a break

Pay attention to signs of exhaustion or feeling overwhelmed, and communicate when you need time to rest.

  • Checking in with yourself

Your basic needs matter too. When someone else can care for your baby, take time to shower, eat a proper meal, catch up on sleep, or simply acknowledge how you're feeling.

You Are Still More Than a Parent

Parenthood changes your priorities, relationships and daily life. It may even change the way you understand yourself. But becoming a parent does not mean you have to erase the person you were once before. Your interests, ambitions, friendships, and individual needs still matter, even if they have had to take a back seat for a while.
